NATCHITOCHES – Errors and untimely hitting from the Northwestern State baseball team helped Texas A&M-Corpus Christi win the rubber match of the three game series 5-1 Sunday in Southland Conference action.

The Demons (14-19, 10-8 SLC) were tagged with three errors that led to three of the five Islander runs to be unearned. Corpus improved to 15-20 overall and 8-10 in conference while giving NSU its second straight conference series loss.

For the second straight game, Demon starting pitching lasted less than three innings as Andrew Adams (1-5) gave up three runs, one earned, in 2.1 innings pitched.

Corpus starter Daniel Minor (6-1) pitched eight innings and allowed one unearned run and eight strikeouts.

Offensively the Demons had seven hits and left nine runners on base. NSU designated hitter Colin Bear led the team with a 2-for-4 performance and the lone run batted in for the Demons.

The Islanders had eight hits with all but two batters in the lineup having at least one knock.

In the first, Adams walked the first two batters followed by a Corpus DH Jonathon Gonzales then pop up to second and a miscue in the infield on a bunt from Jordan Lee that led to the first run of the game.

Islander left fielder Jordan Lee then hit what could have been a double play ball to NSU first baseman Shaun Hoover who threw the ball into left field to allow all runners to advance including scoring Eric Weiss who went down as an unearned run.

Another error by Adams allowed Jermie Marek to reach base and allow Santiago Ruiz to fly out for a sacrifice to score another unearned run.

In the fifth inning, Marek again reached on an error when shortstop Matt Burns had an errant throw to first. After a stolen base and single by Stafford Brantley, he was able to score.

The Islanders added another in the sixth on a double from Drew Vest followed by a single to left from Gonzales.

Northwestern State added its lone run in the eighth inning after right fielder Kevin Sanford reached on an error by third baseman Dan Sciantarelli. He took second on a past ball before Bear hit a ball down the right field line to score him.

After the first inning NSU did not get a runner to second base before the run scoring eighth.

Northwestern State will be back in action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Louisiana-Lafayette at Brown-Stroud Field, and then again Wednesday in Lafayette.
