The Northwestern State volleyball team heads to the Baylor Invitational for matches with the host Bears and Colorado on Friday at 12:30 and 4:30, respectively, before facing off with Appalachian State on Saturday at three o’clock at the Ferrell Center.

The Lady Demons enter the weekend with a 1-6 overall record while Baylor posts a 2-6 mark. The Buffs and Mountaineers enter with near-perfect records, sitting at 5-1 and 6-1, respectively.

“It’s been a pretty challenging season so far, but of the six losses I would say that three, if not four of them are from teams who could be the top team in the Southland Conference,” said fourth year co-head coach Hugh Hernesman. “As a team, we talk about these pre-conference games and that they are for figuring out who we are and that they’re going to prepare us for our conference schedule.”

Sophomore Caiti O’Connell leads NSU, knocking down 60 kills (2.73 k/set) and putting up 12 blocks. Freshman Ashley Elrod sits just behind O’Connell with 57 kills (2.59 k/set) while digging up 48 attacks.

Junior Emily Johnson has already collected two double-doubles this season, notching 84 assists and 54 digs as libero Keelie Arneson currently sits seventh in the Southland Conference in digs per set (4.05) to aid the Lady Demons.

“We’ve played these types of teams enough in the past to know that nothing is taking us by surprise in that moment,” said Hernesman. “We know they’re physical, we’re going to have to block some balls and we’re going to have to work around the block so there are some things we’re working on defensively.”

The Bears dropped a 3-1 decision to Texas State Tuesday night. Zoe Adom matched a career-high with 20 kills in the losing effort, and Thea Munch-Soegaard recorded her second-straight double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs.

Adom leads Baylor with a 3.59 k/set average and a .276 attack percentage while putting up 20 total blocks. Setter Amy Rosenbum has dished out a massive 287 assists (9.90 a/set) in just eight contests so far as Mackenzie Mayo dug up 97 attacks at libero.

The Buffs took down non-conference foes Syracuse and Rutgers last weekend to call themselves tournament champions at the Candlewood Suites Invite in Syracuse, N.Y.

Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Edelman leads Colorado with a .652 attack percentage while dishing out 173 assists so far this season. Redshirt senior Kerra Schroeder leads the defense with 2.81 digs/set while knocking down 40 kills (1.90 k/s) and a .248 percentage.

The Mountaineers defeated Towson and Binghampton last weekend at the NC State tournament to establish a new winning streak. Before the tournament, App State began 2013 with four consecutive wins, including a 3-0 take-down of SLC member Sam Houston State.

Sophomore Emily Corrigan earned Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after leading the Mountaineers with 53 kills in four matches, good enough for a team-high 3.79 kills per set average. Corrigan finished second on the team in digs per set, averaging 2.14 after knocking down 30 digs in last weekend’s matches.

Megan Mahoney has dug up 120 attacks (5.22 dig/set) to lead the defense as setter Paige Brown puts out 10.39 assists per set.

The Lady Demons make their home debut on Tuesday as they host Southern Mississippi at seven o’clock at Prather Coliseum.
