Stacey DiFrancesco and Caiti O'Connell led the way for the Northwestern State volleyball team as the Lady Demons swept McNeese State on Saturday afternoon in Prather Coliseum.

The 25-13, 25-9, 25-16 win improves NSU's record to 16-8 overall and 8-4 in Southland Conference play while the loss drops the Cowgirls to 6-19, 1-11.

As a team, the Lady Demons committed only eight errors and hit for a season-high .414.

“Hitting .414 is ridiculous for us,” said NSU co-head coach Hugh Hernesman. “I think a lot of time the attention goes to the hitters but Sweet really did a good job of setting up our offense today too.”

O'Connell landed 14 attacks with no errors for a career-high hitting percentage of .700.

DiFrancesco recorded 10 kills with only one error, also managing a career-high hitting percentage at .692.

“For Caiti and Stacey to almost hit .700 as a tandem on the outside is almost unheard of,” said Hernesman. “I don't know if we will ever see that again, I would like to but it is so rare. Our offense has received a lot of attention in practice over the last two weeks so it's good to see it all come together.”

Emily Sweet helped set NSU up for success, putting up 36 assists.

Keelie Arneson controlled the defense, collecting 13 digs and serving up three aces.

The Lady Demons came out hot in the first set as they ran out to an 8-2 lead. A kill by O'Connell sparked a 4-0 run, giving NSU a 13-4 advantage. The Cowgirls could not compete, dropping the set 25-13.

Northwestern State dominated in the second set, managing five runs of four or more points. The Lady Demons won the set 25-9.

McNeese took their first lead of the match in the third set after a kill by Amber Fryer put the Cowgirls up 5-4.

McNeese was not able to maintain the momentum of the game as NSU went on a 7-0 streak.

The Lady Demons went on two more runs and won the set 25-16.

“I have confidence in the way we are approaching the season and I think that we are going to start peaking now,” said Hernesman. “After a year and a half with this group I think we really know what we want to do defensively so we can focus more on the offense.”

Northwestern State goes on the road next week to match up against Nicholls State on Thursday and Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. The Lady Demons return home on Nov. 2 to play Stephen F. Austin.
