Texas A&M, Louisiana-Monroe, LSU, Missouri State, Oklahoma, Oral Roberts,
Sam Houston State, and Texas Christian University all took part in
regionals, and LSU, Oklahoma, and TCU advanced to super regionals.
The tough 56-game schedule features teams from the Big 12, SEC, Conference-USA, Sun Belt, Missouri Valley, Western Athletic Conference, Great West, and Southwestern Athletic Conference.
In my 18 years of coaching it is without a doubt the toughest non-conference schedule I¹ve experienced, said Burroughs.
Northwestern State will play three very strenuous road swings. The first is from Feb. 26-Mar. 6 playing seven, then an eight-game test from Mar. 9-20, and then a nine-game run towards the end of the season from Apr.30-May 14.
We are preparing our team for this. We talk about it all the time, and we want them to have a chip on their shoulder,² said Burroughs. We did everything in our power to try and get more home games, but this is what we have and our guys will absolutely attack it with everything they have.
I think in order to hopefully get an at-large bid, it is important to play RPI games, he said. ³We are doing this and will continue to do so.
With that said, our number one goal is to win the Southland Conference.
The Demons host three of the top four remaining SLC teams from 2012 including last year¹s champion Sam Houston and runner-up Southeastern Louisiana. We basically go 14 of 15 on the road with some very tough, quality opponents that lead us right into league play,² said Burroughs. If that stretch doesn¹t prepare and test us, I really don¹t know what will.
NSU opens up at home with a three-game series against Grambling Feb. 15, on the road for a single game at Louisiana-Lafayette Feb. 20, and then a three-game set at home with Texas-Pan American Feb. 22.
The Demons then open the seven-game road swing featuring a two-game set with Texas A&M, three games with Missouri State, and then two against Tulane.
Northwestern State then returns home to face ULM before hitting the road again for the eight-game road trip with ULM, TCU, Oklahoma, and LSU.
After LSU, the Demons open conference season at home against SLU, on the
road at McNeese State, and back at home for Central Arkansas. Louisiana-Lafayette comes to Brown-Stroud Field before NSU travels to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and then returns to Natchitoches for a single game against Louisiana Tech, and three games with Lamar and Sam Houston State. After SHSU, Northwestern State has nine games on the road featuring Southern, Stephen F. Austin, Nicholls, and Louisiana Tech before rounding out the season with Oral Roberts at home.
Great teams attack all games and opponents the same. You play a nameless opponent and attack the game, said Burroughs.
The Southland Conference tournament will begin May 22 in Sugarland, Tex and end May 25. Demon Baseball season tickets go on sale Dec. 3.
