Northwestern State University will honor the late Tom Murchison with the President’s Distinguished Service Award Saturday. Members of Murchison family will receive the award at halftime of the Northwestern State-Sam Houston football game.

“My return to Natchitoches and Northwestern in 1989 was greatly enriched by the friendship of Tom Murchison, whom I first met in Sunday school where he was my teacher for over 12 years at First Baptist Church,” said Northwestern State President Dr. Randall J. Webb.  “His intellect and in-depth knowledge about a variety of subjects were staggering, and he was an outstanding attorney whose primary concern was the welfare of his clients.

“Although Tom did not attend Northwestern, he taught for the University as an adjunct professor in business law.  He also had a passion for helping Northwestern and the local community by giving of himself and his resources for the greater good.  Those who knew Tom well or were his clients knew him for his service to others.  In honoring Tom posthumously, we also honor his lovely wife, Vickie, and their entire family, all of whom know the importance of helping other human beings, often outside the public eye.”

Murchison, who passed away in January, practiced law in Natchitoches for almost 50 years and was City attorney for more than three decades. He was named Outstanding Young Lawyer of Louisiana in 1973 and was a voting member for many years of the Louisiana Law Institute.

A graduate of Union University in Jackson, Tenn., Murchison received his law degree from Tulane University, where he graduated first in his class in 1962 and served as editor of the Tulane Law Review.

Murchison was active in numerous civic, religious and professional organizations, including the Jaycees, Lions Club and state, local and national Bar Associations.  He was honored by the local Chamber of Commerce as Natchitoches Parish Man of the Year and was cited for numerous pro bono services to the community.

A founding member of the Natchitoches Area Dixie Youth organization, Murchison coached youth baseball, basketball and track teams for many years. He was an ordained deacon at the First Baptist Church of Natchitoches and was a Sunday school teacher for the Couples Too class for more than 27 years.
