Northwestern State rowing team ready for state championships

Northwestern State University’s rowing team will compete in the Louisiana State Championships Saturday in New Orleans.

The team, which is coached by Jason Stelly, participated in the Frostbite Regatta last weekend in Wichita, Kan.

Northwestern State’s women’s novice 4+ team won their race. Team members are Melissa Lemos, Holly Moreno, Christina Palomo, Jordan McManus and they were coxed by Kelsey Faulkner.

The women’s lightweight 4+, men’s novice 4+, and men’s lightweight 4+ placed fourth. The women’s novice 8+ and men’s novice 8+ were fifth. The mixed 8+ A was sixth, while the women’s varsity 4+ was 11th and the mixed 8+ B was 22nd.

NSU competed against defending national champion club team Grand Valley State along with teams from Wichita State, the University of Colorado, Colorado State, the University of Missouri, Iowa State, Kansas State, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Central Oklahoma and the University of Kansas. Approximately 40 rowers are on this year’s team.
