RBI doubles by Brianna Rodriguez and Cassandra Barefield in the first inning aided in the 5-2 Victory for the Northwestern State softball team over Nicholls State Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Demons (20-6, 2-3) finish the three-game series 2-1 against the Colonels (10-16, 2-4).

“We needed this win today,” said head coach Donald Pickett. “We started off really well, and held Nicholls to just two runs throughout the game.”

Junior shortstop Tara McKenney lead off for the Lady Demons in the bottom of the first with a single and advanced to second on a wild throw by Nicholls' Leah Andrus.

Cali Burke singled to Andrus as well, pushing McKenney to third, only to be sent home on Rodriguez's RBI double to center field. Barefield followed suit and switched places with Rodriguez on a shot to the center field wall, sending all base runners home and giving the Lady Demons a three-run lead.

Scoring continued into the second inning for NSU as Brittany Virgoe stepped up to the plate with two runners on and one out to rip one to Andrus, sending one runner home.

Cali Burke put the ball on the ground for a SAC grounder to send another runner home, capping NSU's scoring at five.

The Colonels fought back in the sixth and grabbed two runs off of three hits, but were unable to put any more on the board.

Senior Brooke Boening (6-5) threw a complete game allowing just eight hits and striking out one.

Barefield led from the plate going one-for-three and two RBI, followed by McKenney as she went two-for-four and crossed the plate twice.

The Lady Demons will host Jackson State on Wednesday at five o'clock for a non-conference match-up before hitting the road next weekend for a three-game series at Texas A&M Corpus Christi beginning on Saturday at 1:00.
