Northwestern State co-head coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr announced the addition of Learie Sandy from Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) as an assistant coach.

Sandy's hiring is subject to the approval of the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System, which includes Northwestern.

Sandy spent six seasons as the lead assistant for the Martin Methodist women’s basketball program, and worked under four different head coaches.  At MMC, he handled all aspects of recruiting, coached forwards and post players, scouted and prepared reports for opposing teams, monitored academic progress and organized community service activities.

"We are very excited to add Learie to our staff.  He and his family are going to be a tremendous addition to Northwestern State and the Natchitoches community,” said Brooke Stoehr. “Learie has great connections with coaches across the country from his time at Martin Methodist and with the Tennessee Flight Nike travel organization.”

While apart of the Redhawk family he saw the best two-year win total in school history, including the best single season win record (19).  He helped MMC to the first-ever NAIA Top 25 and landed in the TranSouth Conference finals for the first time in program history.

He coached NAIA Student of the Year and All-American Jessy Christopher and two-time all-American Vee Young.  He was also an integral part of the team’s academic success; every team he coached had a 3.0 grade point average each season.

“Throughout the search process, Learie displayed a strong desire to be at NSU and help the program get back to a championship level,” said Stoehr. “His skill set and determination will help our student athletes succeed on a daily basis.  We are thrilled with his decision to join our staff."

He has been a Nike Flight AAU program coach in Murfreesboro, Tenn., since 2009 where he won the 2010 and 2012 national championships. He had to coordinate travel plans and organize and conduct practices.

He also has also assisted in coaching various basketball camps.  He has helped at the

University of Kentucky (2009-12), Tennessee Tech (2010), and Middle Tennessee (2009-11).

Sandy is a native of Trinidad and Tobago and is a 2008 Martin Methodist College graduate.
