Local law enforcement officers joined the The Law Enforcement Torch Run, a fundraiser to increase awareness of Special Olympics. They met the delegatation from Caddo Parish in Powhatan Tuesday afternoon and ran the next leg to Collins Pavilion on the NSU campus for a meal. The run resumed Wednesday for the next leg to the Rapides Parish line. The torch run will end May 24 in Hammond for the Special Olympic Games.

Billy Gray, State Volunteer Chairman for Louisiana Ducks Unlimited, provided the Natchitoches Rotary Club with an overview of the volunteer organization and mission.  DU efforts work to  conserve, restore and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl so that we can pass this heritage on to our children. He noted that waterfowl conservation is facing important challenges as wetlands and other habitats are being degraded and destroyed across North America. Ducks Unlimited has a vision to reverse this trend through diverse public and private partnerships supported by volunteer efforts and local fundraisers that return 83 percent of every dollar donated to the conservation effort.  He displayed a map of Louisiana, which highlighted the many area projects that locally effect our region. He closed with questions and asked that everyone mark their calendars for the upcoming DU Sponsor Dinner Sept 24, 5:30 hosted by Exchange Bank and Trust and the Natchitoches DU Banquet October 10, 6:00 at the Natchitoches Event Center.   For more information call 471-2092 or 652-1138. M.R. Weaver Elementary hosted its Spring Carnival on April 18. The students had a variety of games to play. Some of those games were plinko, duck pond, cupcake walk, ring toss, basket ball toss, and bingo. Following many of the activities was the highlight of the evening “pie in the face.” Students voted on their favorite candidate to have a pie thrown in their face at the conclusion of the contest. Coach Jeff Rachal, was chosen as the winner. At left is principal Ray Gandy.
