NSU Middle Lab Student Council will host the Canines on Cane River Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m.- to noon on the Downtown Riverbank Stage. There will be a dog show featuring available dogs from Natchitoches Humane Society, Hope for Paws and Natchitoches Animal Control Shelter. Student Council members will sell human and dog treats as well as cat and dog baskets. On front row from left are Edouard Ferrell, Cameron Owsley, Jackson Carroll, Weston Ivey, Grant Burleson and Troy Cannon. On middle row are Anna Murchison, Cooper Miller, Claire Spann and Callie Owsley.  St. Mary’s Junior High and High School students participated in National History Day competition held in New Orleans. The theme this year was “Turning Points in History” and students could address themes in a variety of ways. St. Mary’s students first competed in regional competition and then at the state level held at the World War II Museum in New Orleans. Over 300 students from around the state competed in New Orleans. Jackie Clark finished second in the senior exhibit about the Manhattan Project, Lauren Fidelak finished first in junior paper about Hiroshima, Elizabeth Long finished second in the junior paper about Penicillin and Anne Evans and Madelyn Peluso finished first in the junior documentary about The Dust Bowl. Several of these students will be going on to nationals in Washington D.C. to represent Louisiana. On front row from left are Sammie Phillips, Wyatt Quinn, Ben Gewin, Michael Mayeux, Lauren Fidelak, Anne Evans, Stephen Mayeux, and Dylan Bennett. Rotarian Mark Begnaud introduced David McGraw as a close friend who is also an entrepreneur. Begnaud said McGraw was an internet marketing pioneer who began promoting his crawfish business there. McGraw employs 30-35 people during the peak crawfish season and ships his product primarily to the west and east coasts of the United States. He ships them in mesh sacks and cartons that are chilled to 60 degrees for up to 48 hours. The orders contain seasoning and cooking instructions. McGraw owns Church Street Inn, has real estate interests, storage facilities and once owned several retail gift stores. To be successful in any endeavor, McGraw said you must provide a quality product, give good service and have good prices.

Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne was in Natchitoches Thursday to address media and residents about the June 28 opening of the La. Sports Hall of Fame. He and his entourage were traveling in the tourism van above. As he held a “Travel Means Job” sign, Dardenne was on a mission to promote tourism for National Tourism week. He said he will spend more time in Natchitoches, especially for the grand opening of the museum. He believes the museum will bring more tourists to the City of Natchitoches. “Twenty-six million people visited Louisiana last year and spent $10 billion dollars which translates to $665 million in tax revenue to the state. As a result, 8,000 new jobs in the hospitality business have been created. Those significant dollars are being generated in the hospitality industry in Louisiana everyday.”
