Dr. Bill Brent, director of the Mrs. H.D. Dear Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts, will audition students interested in participating in music programs at Northwestern State.
The opportunity arose last fall when Northwestern State administrators visited the Universitaria Tecnologico Comfenalco in Cartagena to sign an exchange opportunity agreement. While there, Dr. Marcus Jones, vice president for University Affairs, witnessed a symphony concert presented by a secondary lab school affiliated with the university. Jones was so impressed, he shared a video of the performance with Brent, who is also Northwestern State’s director of bands.
“I’m not sure how many students I will interview and audition but I can tell you that the DVD of this high school orchestra performing simply was amazing. I can’t wait to get there to meet these outstanding musicians and hopefully bring some of them to Natchitoches,” Brent said.
At the same time, Jones plans to meet with the president of the Universidad de Cartegena to explore developing dual enrollment and exchange opportunities similar to the ones established with Comfenalco.
The visit is one of several contacts Northwestern State administrators have made in recent months to promote international exchange opportunities with students in Colombia, Italy, China and Spain.
