First year Northwestern State co-head coach Brooke Stoehr has announced the signing of guards Markeisha Johnson and Janelle Perez to her 2012 class.

Johnson is a 5-8 shooting guard out of Avoyelles High School. She earned first team Louisiana Sports Writers Association 3A All-State honors after she averaged 17.9 points per game this past season in helping guide her team to the Class 3A state playoffs.

“Markeisha’s signing adds depth to the perimeter while adding needed size and athleticism to our guard rotation,” said Stoehr.

“We’re excited about her commitment to the new direction of the NSU women’s basketball program.

Perez is a 5-2 point guard out of Horizon HS in El Paso Texas. She sank 18.4 points a game to go along with 5.2 assists and 5.2 steals per contest.

She was named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 4A/5A All-Star Team and also earned TAGC All-Region and All-State honors as well as being named the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame Athlete of the Year.

“Janelle is a savvy point guard who loves to compete every time she steps on the court,” said Stoehr.

“She fills an immediate need at the point guard position. We are certainly excited she has decided to join the Lady Demon family.”

NSU lost its starting point guard in Ronikka Drake and starting shooting guard in Jordi James to graduation after last season.
