Northwestern State University has been accepted into the Adult Learning Focused Initiative (ALFI) Coalition.

The ALFI Coalition is comprised of colleges and universities committed to the success of adult learners. Coalition members strive to base their institution’s policies and practices on the Council on Adult and Experiential Learning’s (CAEL) “Principles of Effectiveness for Serving Adult Learners” and continuously work to meet the unique needs of their adult students. They improve adult learner programs and services in order to make educational opportunities more accessible and to remove obstacles from the path to degree completion.

In 1999, CAEL launched the Adult Learning Focused Institution Initiative in an effort to help colleges and universities improve learning opportunities for adults. CAEL formed the Adult Learning Focused Institution Coalition to assist institutions in implementing the latest research and in learning from one another.

Institutions of higher education are eligible if they: offer degree programs to adults, are accredited by regional accrediting agencies, are a current institutional member of CAEL and have administered the ALFI tools within the past three years.

CAEL supports coalition members’ efforts to improve institutional practice. Coalition members may use the ALFI logo for marketing programs to adults and attracting employer tuition dollars, media attention, and grant opportunities from foundations and share best practices for serving adult learners through program proposals for presentation in the ALFI workshop track at the CAEL annual international conference. Members can share best practices for serving adult learners by submitting articles for consideration for publication in the CAEL Forum and News (CAEL’s electronic newsletter) or as a monograph for publication on the CAEL website, participate in networking opportunities with other Coalition members and be included in a list of coalition members posted on the CAEL website.
