Matthew Fowler, in his fifth year as a member of the Northwestern State sports information staff, has been named assistant sports information director, announced athletics director Greg Burke and assistant AD/sports information director Doug Ireland.

Fowler has been an integral part of operations for NSU sports information during the past three years.

He replaces former associate SID Matthew Bonnette, who has taken over as assistant AD/media relations director at his alma mater, McNeese State, after nine years on the Northwestern staff. Fowler's appointment is subject to the approval of the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System, which includes NSU.

Fowler has worked as the primary media contact for the Lady Demon soccer program and has been the secondary contat for Demon baseball. He assisted with production of NSU's award-winning football, baseball and men's basketball media guides, as well as game programs for several sports and other promotional materials.

He has been the official scorer and statistician for football, men's and women's basketball, baseball and soccer.

In 2010, Fowler became the fourth NSU student assistant to receive the prestigious Ace Higgins Award that is presented annually by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association to the outstanding student assistant SID in the state.

"Fowler worked arm in arm alongside Matthew Bonnette during the last three years, and his excellent capabilities and knowledge of our operations assure that we'll not miss a beat despite losing a tremendous team member," said Ireland. "Fowler is first and foremost an exceptional person of character who has great passion for Northwestern, a love of sports and a wonderful, welcoming personality.

Among former NSU assistant SIDs are Southland Conference associate commissioner Bruce Ludlow; Kansas State assistant AD/SID Kenny Lannou; Dr. Thomas Newsom, former assistant SID at Baylor, Southland Conference communications director and currently president of The Art Institute of Dallas; Daucy Crizer, assistant AD and former SID at Lamar; Dart Volz, former SID at Southeastern Louisiana; Melissa Reynaud Foley, former assistant SID at LSU; Dustin Eubanks, NSU's director of NCAA compliance, and Troy Mitchell, assistant AD/SID at Henderson State.

Other former NSU SID staff members include Bill Magrath, media relations manager for the Sports Business Daily; Erik Cox, now the SID at Lamar; Adam Jonson, assistant AD for ticket operations at Louisiana-Monroe; Fletcher Jonson, SID at Centenary; Matt Bailey, senior director for external relations at Centenary; and Mike Morrison, editor of the ESPN Information Please Almanac.

Fowler, a Homer native, graduated from NSU last December with a bachelor’s degree in general studies with a concentration in arts and communication.

He also minored in sports management. He was an intern in the NSU SID office this spring. Fowler's appointment is on an interim basis.

Prior to joining the sports information staff as a student worker, Fowler was a member of the Spirit of Northwestern marching band as a trumpet player. Fowler was also very active in campus activities including serving as President of the Baptist Christian Ministry and participating in intramural athletics. At Homer High School, Fowler was Claiborne Parish student of the year in his senior year and valedictorian of his graduating class.

On June 30, Fowler married Whitney Brandon, a NSU graduate and a Florien native who is a teacher at Natchitoches Central.
