Jones led off the inning for the Tigers (19-2) with a single up the middle. Mark Laird laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Jones to second base before Bregman hit the walk-off single.
Northwestern State dropped to 9-14 overall on the season. The Demons will open up Southland Conference play with Southeastern Louisiana on Friday.
LSU opened the game with a run in the first inning after Raph Rhymes singled to left field to score Alex Bergman who reached on a double to right center field the at-bat before. Rhymes made it to second after Katz reached on a fielder’s choice that turned into an error, but Demon starter Cody Butler worked out of the jam with a strikeout to Christian Ibarra.
Northwestern State was held scoreless until the eighth inning when Toby Cornejo singled up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Cort Brinson. After Nick Purdy grounded out to the right side of the infield, Todd Wallace put a single into right field to score Cornejo.
Butler worked nine innings and allowed one run on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Reliever Stephen Spann worked out of a jam in the 12th inning that saw a man on third with two outs, but he struck out hitter Chris Sciambra to push it to a 13th frame. Spann worked three innings and allowed no hits and struck out two with two walks.
Cameron Brewer (0-1) took the loss on just one-third of an inning pitched. Will LaMarche (1-0) got the win after he pitched 2.2 innings and allowed no runs or hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Kevin Berry pitched one inning and gave up a hit and struck out two. Joey Bourgeois pitched one inning and gave up the run in the eight on two hits. Chris Cotton went an inning and was perfect.
Nate Fury and Hunter Devall combined for 1.1 innings and gave up two walks.
Bregman led the Tigers at the plate with him scoring one run and knocking in the other. He was three-for-six on the day.
Todd Wallace led the Demon offense with two hits and the lone run batted in.
The Southeastern Louisiana series for the Demons will start at 6:30 on Friday, and will continue at 2:00 on Saturday and 1 o’clock on Sunday.
