Northwestern State earned three of four possible Southland Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors as seniors Karensa Ellis and Sarah Jones swept the women’s awards and sophomore Aaron Williams won the men’s field award, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

Ellis, a native of Alexandria, earned the honor after winning the 3,000-meter run and finishing third in the 800-meter run last Saturday at Texas State’s Bobcat Invitational.

She set personal records in both events, clocking a time of 10:47.02 in the 3000m and 2:14.99 in the 800m. Ellis’ 800m time is currently the third fastest in the Southland.

Jones also had a phenomenal weekend; earning top-five finishes in the triple jump and long jump at the Bobcat Invitational. The Houston, Texas native finished second in the triple jump with a personal and Southland-best mark of 39-10.50 and fourth in the long jump after leaping 18-07.25.

Williams had the best performance of his career, grabbing the individual title in the triple jump at the Bobcat Invitational with a leap of 51-04.25. The mark is the best in the SLC by almost a foot and is over two feet further than his previous personal record of 49-00.75.

This is the first athlete of the week honor for all three athletes this season.

Ellis, Jones, Williams and the rest of the NSU track and field program travel to Nacogdoches, Texas this Saturday to compete at Stephen F. Austin’s Skechers/SFA Alumni Invitational.
