Northwestern State University friends and alumni need to do one of those “save the date” things for Aug. 24. That’s when the popular Athletic Scholarship Auction that has been generating funds for Demon sports program since 1989 is scheduled.

The dinner and auction that is held every other year features valuable and unusual silent and live auction items and experiences, good food and an opportunity for NSU fans and followers to mix and mingle with coaches and athletes.

Scholarship auctions have been vibrant, exciting social events over the years while also serving the worthwhile purpose of raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to support men’s and women’s athletic teams at the university.

Among the numerous items that will be available during the live and silent auctions will be artwork, jewelry, furniture, clothes, meals and much more. Past auctions have offered cars, boats and four-wheelers, and there will be some big surprises this year.

Auction participants will also have the opportunity to get trips to major sports events, hunting and fishing excursions, vacation getaways and unique experiences like play-calling at NSU football games or conducting the Spirit of Northwestern marching band.

Bidders will get some great bargains, and their purchases will go for a good cause by providing financial support for a sports program that attracts outstanding young people to the university and provides entertainment and an economic boost to the region.

Tickets for the event, which begins at 5 p.m. with a social hour before the dinner and auction, are $125 a couple, $500 for a table of eight or $1,000 for a VIP table of 10 that will feature front row seats for the live auction and entertainment.

Alumni and friends of Northwestern athletics can support the auction through their attendance, of course, but also by donating merchandise, trips or other events and items for the live and silent auctions. Information is available by calling 357-5251.

Northwestern’s sports programs have been enhanced over the years by the auctions, which also provide a lot of entertainment and excitement for participants. Save that Aug. 24 date for the NSU Scholarship Auction, and plan to attend.
