Northwestern State sports information staffers Doug Ireland and Matthew Fowler were recently presented awards for media guides they produced in 2012-13 as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association held its annual awards brunch.

The Northwestern men’s basketball media guide for 2012-13 took first in the LSWA’s annual contest for the third time in the last five years, in the FCS-level schools' media guide category for football or men's basketball publications.

The NSU women’s basketball media guide for last season won a third place in the Division II media guide contest, encompassing FCS-level schools’ publications for all sports other than football or men’s basketball.

Ireland, the Demons' sports information director, edited the men's basketball media guide. Fowler, wrapping up his first year as assistant SID, edited the women’s basketball book and contributed design of the men’s guide.

Contest judges provided comments for first-place entries in each of the six categories.

Said the judge choosing the Demons' basketball guide as the category winner: "Striking cover with excellent color, classy photos with basketball history, coaches families, etc., nice opponents’ section with ample facts in small space.”

Ireland will mark his 25th anniversary as SID in late January and has won 22 LSWA awards in the past 14 years.

The SID awards were presented June 30 at the LSWA Awards Brunch at The Landing Restaurant in Natchitoches, following the 2013 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Celebration, which NSU sports information helps to host.
