The Northwestern State volleyball team has been selected to finish fifth in the Southland Conference coach’s preseason poll with 78 points and third by sports information directors with 88 points, announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Demons return five starters from last season after finishing 2012 tied for third with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, six spots higher than preseason polls predicted.

NSU amassed a 20-13 overall record, 12-6 in conference play to note the most successful season in program history, and the first winning season since 1987.

Juniors Stacy DiFrancesco and Keelie Arneson earned 2013 preseason first team honors, followed by Mackenzie Neely and Caiti O’Connell collecting second team accolades.

Defending regular-season and conference tournament champion Central Arkansas has been selected to win the 2013 regular-season championship after receiving eight first-place votes and 117 points in the coach’s poll, while accumulating six first-place votes and 115 points in the SID Poll.

Oral Roberts claimed second place while Sam Houston State and SFA tie for third in the coach’s poll.

AMCC racked up 75 points from the coach’s poll and 85 from the SIDs to hold down seventh and fourth place, respectively.

Newcomer Houston Baptist received sixth and seventh place in the respective polls while Lamar (eighth), Southeastern Louisiana (ninth), McNeese State (tied for 10th), Nicholls (tied for 10th), and New Orleans (12th) round out the voting at the bottom of the polls.
