Burke attended his first Tourist Commission meeting as a member of the panel on Tuesday evening. The Natchitoches Parish Council appointed him earlier this month.
“When we began to consider how to fill this seat on the commission, it quickly occurred to us that the university as a whole, and particularly the athletic department, has a very significant impact on the tourism business in Natchitoches Parish,” said Rick Nowlin, the parish president. “We have a great relationship with NSU and NSU Athletics and Greg is deeply rooted in our community and has been very involved with several civic organizations and major events even outside of his important role at Northwestern.
“He is an excellent addition to the Tourist Commission,” said Nowlin. “This makes all the sense in the world.”
Burke is in his 18th year as director of athletics at NSU. Tens of thousands of visitors to Natchitoches arrive annually to attend athletic events at the university, and NSU frequently hosts Southland Conference postseason tournaments and championship events bringing more visitors to the community.
