Nakia Graham of Mansfield was the first place winner in a statewide essay contest sponsored by the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus. Winners were announced during the Bayou Classic Scholarship Brunch in New Orleans, where Graham was awarded $3,000.

Graham is a sophomore in the Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern State University majoring in secondary education with a concentration in English. Graham graduated as valedictorian of her class at Mansfield High School and enrolled at Northwestern State on an academic scholarship.

At NSU, she is also a member of President’s Leadership Program Association, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, and Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity, serving as vice president of external operations.

Graham was one of 25 students from throughout Louisiana nominated by the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus to enter the essay contest.
