He readily agreed, and the legislature overwhelmingly voted in favor of these new laws to give the public greater access to the inner workings of state and local government. At the time, Louisiana could proudly boast of having the strongest public records and open meetings laws as compared to any other state in America. It sure was good to be at the top of one of the best lists for a change.

From the days of my youth, I recall with great fondness the presidency of President Ronald Reagan. Full disclosure—my brother Tom was working on the White House Staff at the time, and I was attending The Heights Preparatory School in Potomac, Maryland. So, on the weekends, I rode the Metro down to D.C. to meet my brother at the White House where we would often remain in his office late on Saturday nights as he wrapped up his work for the week.

This would deprive women and girls of the equal educational opportunities they struggled for decades to secure, and cost states billions of dollars to implement.
