Of course, there is no more radical mercy than that of Jesus’s sacrificial death at Calvary. The Living New Testament in Titus 3:5 says, “He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.” In the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) story told by Jesus, the wayward son received radical mercy when his father accepted him as his son. Then, showed him grace by throwing him a party. Rosemary Bardsley, Australian Bible teacher, said that our challenge with mercy is — mercy is always appropriate in those who have been shown God’s mercy. C. S. Lewis defined divine mercy as undeserved clemency from slavery to sin and separation from God. Missionary Elisabeth Elliott wrote, “God never withholds from his child, that which his love and wisdom call good. God refusals are always merciful – severe mercies at times, but mercies all the same. God never denies us our hearts desire except to give us something better.”
